Editor’s Note: Winter 2006

Digital Journal — When Digital Journal magazine began publishing five years ago, Windows XP wasn’t even launched yet, LCD monitors were just starting to replace clunky CRTs, colour inkjet printers were still novelties and Napster was just about to change the music industry forever.
How times have changed.

Today, technology is a global phenomenon touching every corner of our lives. It’s virtually impossible to function without having one gadget or another strapped to your hip, and newly created tech companies have turned into colloquial street jargon (“Did I remember to TiVo The Colbert Report?”). Thanks to hot devices like iPods and digital cameras, it’s much cooler to be up on gadget news.

Celebrating our fifth anniversary in 2006, Digital Journal is gearing up to bring you a year full of intriguing developments. From the growing use of Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP), to new cellular and satellite radio technologies, to a DVD format war, 2006 will be monumental for many different areas of the tech biz.

In our first issue of ’06, Digital Journal takes a look at the Internet’s most explosive trend — online poker. With tens of thousands of people betting online at any given minute,
Net gambling is forecast to earn a whopping $24 billion by 2010. In our exclusive cover story, David Silverberg exposes semi-legal gambling, poker sites that go public and the TV show that birthed the Net’s latest cash cow.

Also in this issue, Digital Journal columnist Jack Kapica takes a look at how growing competition is forcing Microsoft to change its business model; we dust off Dante’s deadly sins to examine how they’re destroying relationships, spreading climatic chaos and making us fat; and we talk to the creators of the most controversial film in Canada — Karla. Of course, we’ve also peppered the issue with new gadgets and gizmos that will appeal to all tech lovers.

Last but not least, we’d like to dedicate this issue to the readers that have stood by our side for five years and helped to make this happen. Thank you for joining the revolution.

Enjoy the issue.
