Leading UK brand strategy agency, Flintlock Marketing, has completed a project with local charity Stonepillow, an organisation based in West Sussex that supports people experiencing homelessness, in the run-up to the festive season.
Flintlock Marketing describes its approach as 'clarity in strategy', and works to help businesses and organisations uncover their core brand messaging and direction, utilising a blend of communication, research, creativity and collaboration.
Stonepillow, a charity first established in 1989 by the St Richard’s Catholic Church congregation following the tragic death of a young homeless man, wanted to explore ways to distil its mission, raising awareness of the vital work it does in empowering people to work towards a brighter, restored future.
Before working with Flintlock, Stonepillow had previously revised its internal strategy and devised a Five Pillar Pathway to set out how it helps homeless and vulnerable people move forward. However, it required expertise in deciding how to address the charity's branding, website and communications to better reflect the progressive strategy behind the organisation.
Flintlock was selected following a tender process, with Debbie Jupe, Stonepillow's Head of Fundraising, Communications and Partnerships, saying that 'Stonepillow chose Flintlock as our partner to work on our brand refresh and new website based on their diverse skills and drive to get under the skin of our organisation'.
The Flintlock team conducted an internal audit to pinpoint insights into the brand and highlight areas of communication that would benefit from revision.
As brand marketing experts, Flintlock felt that bringing the human stories behind the charity to the fore was essential, focusing on connection and creating a website that would resonate with the audience the charity relies on for fundraising support.
During this process, Flintlock engaged in an in-depth research project, analysing other local charities and causes, speaking to volunteers, partners and service users at rehabilitation centres, hubs and hostels, and finding an underlying feeling of profound hope and positivity.
The new Stonepillow website was launched in December 2023 as a foundation for the charity’s winter campaign, accompanied by a fundraising film and drawing on real-life experiences and calls to action to show supporters how their support directly impacts the transformative outcomes for recipients.
Rather than a reactive service solely based on offering shelter, food and companionship, Stonepillow offers a five-pillar approach, aiming to prevent people from experiencing homelessness where possible and offer resources, encouragement and support to help those who are not housed to recover, restore and resettle.
It runs two hubs and two further hostels in Chichester and Bognor Regis alongside a Resource Hub in the latter, with drop-in centres, crisis support, and help with basic needs, including signposting to charitable partners and organisations.
The hostels provide communal facilities and bedrooms and are open 24 hours a day, with health services and counselling among the assistance available through the Resource Hub.
Bringing clarity to the importance of these services and the long-term impacts they have on local families and communities was essential, with David Coulthard, Chair of Trustees at Stonepillow, saying that ‘We may not have been Flintlock’s highest spending customer, but they nevertheless really cared and went many extra miles to provide what we needed’.
Flintlock Marketing is a dynamic brand marketing team built on the philosophy of finding the spark in every client and applying exploration and creative thinking to get to grips with the unique aspects that make every organisation special. They examine how those core values can be translated into motivation and engagement.
Flintlock Co-Founder, Tasha Gladman, says, ‘During our initial discovery phase, we found much to inspire us about Stonepillow's work. We found a leadership team with deep knowledge, belief, and passion, and we listened to stories from volunteers and people who had received support to understand this charity's impact on all stakeholders.
Our process included a refresh of the charity's colour palette to represent the positivity it stands for. We drew on images of the Stonepillow team, fundraising activities and services to provide insights into the real moments that matter.
Following our collaboration, the charity branding, communications and website truly reflect the warmth and hope that Stonepillow represents. It has been our pleasure and privilege to work with this fantastic charity and help them raise further awareness – we'd invite everybody to learn more about Stonepillow and help in any way they can.'
