Local Rehab Educates Locals: Fentanyl Street Names

PRESS RELEASE
Published January 4, 2024

Sarasota, FL – Clean Recovery Centers recently wrote a blog informing about fentanyl street names and how to recognize if a loved one is talking about fentanyl. With locations throughout the Suncoast, the goal of Clean Recovery Centers is to connect the public with resources that educate on various topics surrounding substance use disorders.

“Fentanyl is a powerful opioid and is 100 times stronger than morphine. While fentanyl has a bad rep on the streets, it actually was designed for medical uses. Prescription fentanyl is typically used for cancer patients and comes in different forms. Atiq is a lozenge form of fentanyl for those who have a difficult time swallowing pills. Duragesic is a patch that is worn on the skin, and is intended for extended release over a longer period of time. Lazanda is a nasal spray for ease of administration. Sublimaze is an injection that is used for anesthetic purposes as opposed to pain management. These brand name forms of fentanyl are all regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have strict rules for prescribing. These are not typically seen on the streets,” the article reads.

While fentanyl is available by prescription, street fentanyl is a different form and has various names. These can include Apache, murder 8, China girl, friend, TNT, tango and cash, and dance fever. Seeing these in a random text may not necessarily be a need for concern, but it still could warrant a conversation with a loved one.

Street names are used as a type of code, mainly so law enforcement does not know what the person is talking about. The danger of using street names is that they are always changing, and it is important for parents and people of authority to keep up to date on the up-and-coming terms. Emojis can also be used to describe substances, such as a snowflake for cocaine or a tree for marijuana.

“There are not a lot of street names for fentanyl mixed with other substances. This is because fentanyl is used as a cutting agent in many substances, and dealers do not want you to know that fentanyl was used in the first place. They can give you a stronger product to keep you coming back at a cheaper cost to themselves. If they were to disclose a substance such as cocaine was cut with fentanyl, people may be less likely to buy it,” the article continues.

Rainbow fentanyl has been circulating throughout the United States and describes fentanyl being pressed into pills. The pills are colored bright blue, yellow, green, and pink to make them resemble candy and entice the person to take them. Fentanyl powder is typically pressed into pills like oxycodone, which is already an opiate itself. By combining opioids together, the risk of an overdose increases exponentially. It is important to stay up to date on trends and street names with illicit substances, especially the ones surrounding dangerous substances like fentanyl. It can help prevent an overdose in a friend or loved one.
